How do I inspect DURASTEEL® installed in an external environment?
DURASTEEL® is a durable high impact fire protection board that can be used in external applications. Standard galvanised DURASTEEL® sheet is produced with grade DX51D+Z275 galvanised steel sheet to BS EN 10327:2004. Full details on this and the expected durability in different environments is given within Etex BP DURASTEEL® Durability Statement Issue 2-5_April_2017.
Depending on the environment that it is installed within, the galvanisation layer will erode at different rates. The thickness of galvanisation on the sheet can also vary within a defined range. As such we would recommend regular inspection of the DURASTEEL® sheet to identify when the level of erosion of the galvanised layer has begun to impact the steel itself. The regularity of this inspection should relate to the severity of the environment within which it is installed.
Loss of the galvanisation layer will not affect the fire performance of the DURASTEEL® sheet, however loss of the base steel that will occur once the galvanisation layer has completely eroded and the base steel itself starts to erode could affect the fire performance. As such, as soon as any red (ferrous) rust is identified on the DURASTEEL® sheet we would recommend that the individual sheet is replaced by a DURASTEEL® Licensed Installer.
Please note that this does not apply to white or black rust as defined within Etex BP DURASTEEL® Aesthetics Statement Issue 2-5 April_ 2017.
