How do I protect steel column base plates?
It is possible to provide an encasement to steel column base plates, however sometimes this is not always required. On several projects the architects/contractors have specified a concrete curb at the base of the columns to protect the base plate, and one of our encasement boards can then be used on the column sat on the concrete curb. Often there is also a layer of screed on top of the slab which will cover the base plates of the columns. This is common as this will also provide protection to the column encasement board from foot traffic.
We would suggest checking with the design team or fire engineer if the base plate needs to be protected. A fire engineer could conduct a calculation and determine if the concrete slab will provide sufficient heat sink and no protection is required.
Alternatively, if a boarded encasement to the base plates is required, galvanised steel channel and angles can be used fixed to the base plate and boards fixed into these to form an encasement around the base plate. This can then butt against the column encasement board and be sealed using FSi Promat Pyrocoustic® Sealant.
